One Piece Swimsuit vs Bikini: Which Should You Buy?

One Piece vs Bikini Which Should You Buy

Most articles answer this with body shape advice, which is mostly nonsense. Both work on every body. The real difference is what you're doing in the water, how long you're in it, and how much you want to think about your swimsuit while you're wearing it.

Here's the honest comparison.

If you're active in the water, buy a one piece swimsuit. If you're mostly on a towel, buy a bikini. Most people who swim seriously end up owning both and reaching for the one piece more often than they expected.

Where the One Piece Swimsuit Wins

Nothing moves. This is the whole argument and it's a big one. No retying, no readjusting after a wave, no checking. Anyone who has surfed, dived or swum laps in a bikini understands the appeal immediately.

Sun protection. A one piece covers the torso, and a high-neck or long sleeve version covers the shoulders, back and neck, which are the three places people actually burn. Our long sleeve swimwear is UPF50+ for exactly this reason.

Board rash and chafe. Fabric between your skin and a surfboard, a paddle board, or a rock ledge. If you're learning to surf this is not optional, and it's covered in detail in our guide to what to wear surfing.

It works as clothing. A good one piece with linen trousers or a skirt goes from beach to lunch without changing. A bikini does not. This matters more on a trip than it does at home.

Warmth. Marginal, but real on dawn sessions and in water below about 25°C.

Where the Bikini Wins

Tan lines. No contest. If minimal tan lines are the goal, a bikini is the answer and a one piece is not.

The bathroom. A small thing that stops being small on a long beach day.

Mix and match sizing. If you're a different size on top and bottom, a bikini lets you buy correctly. A one piece forces a compromise, usually at the torso. This is a genuine reason a lot of people buy two pieces and it rarely gets mentioned.

Cooling. More skin exposed, more evaporation. Noticeable in real heat.

Drying time. Two small pieces dry faster than one large one. Relevant when you're travelling with two suits and rotating them.

Style range. Cheeky, Brazilian, high-waist, hipster, tie-side. Our guide to bikini bottom styles covers which does what, and the bikini collection shows the cuts.

Choose by What you're Actually Doing

Surfing. One piece, ideally long sleeve. A bikini works only with high-waisted bottoms and a proper band top, and even then you'll adjust. The Luna Long Sleeve is the most-surfed piece we make.

Freediving, snorkelling, scuba. One piece. You want nothing to adjust when you surface, and long sleeves for warmth and sun.

Swimming laps. One piece with a secure back.

Paddle boarding and SUP yoga. One piece. You're upright in direct sun and folding into positions where a shifting top becomes a problem.

Sunbathing and pool days. Bikini. This is the one it's genuinely built for.

Beach club and boat days. Either, but a one piece transitions better if you'll be in and out of restaurants.

Travel with limited luggage. One piece plus one bikini. Two garments cover every scenario.

The Body Shape Question, Honestly

You'll read that one pieces suit some bodies and bikinis suit others. That framing is mostly marketing.

What's actually true:

Fit beats cut, every time. A well-fitting bikini looks better than a badly-fitting one piece, and the reverse. Measure against the size chart rather than guessing from your dress size.

Torso length is the one real constraint on one pieces. A longer torso needs more length in the body of the suit or it pulls at the shoulders and rides up at the leg. This is the single most common reason a one piece feels wrong, and it has nothing to do with size.

Different top and bottom sizes favour a bikini. Not because of how it looks, because of how it fits.

Everything else is preference. High-waisted bottoms define the waist. A high leg line lengthens the leg. A high neck draws the eye up. All three apply equally to both.

Cost, Honestly

A quality one piece costs more upfront than a single bikini. But:

  • A bikini has two pieces to lose, stretch out or fade, and they usually go at different times.
  • A one piece has fewer seams and less elastic under load, so it typically outlasts a two piece.
  • A one piece that works as clothing replaces a cover-up.

Neither is clearly cheaper. What actually determines cost per wear is fabric quality and how you care for it. Cheap swimwear loses its recovery in a season regardless of cut.

How to Make Either One Last

Both die from the same three things: chlorine, UV and heat.

  • Rinse in cold fresh water immediately after every swim.
  • Press the water out, never wring.
  • Dry flat in shade. Direct sun destroys elastane faster than salt does.
  • Never machine wash, never tumble dry.
  • Keep sunscreen off the fabric where you can. Chemical sunscreens stain and degrade elastic fibres.

We use ECONYL® regenerated nylon partly because it holds its shape through this better than cheaper nylon does. More in our sustainability notes.

Frequently asked questions

Is a one piece or a bikini better for swimming?
A one piece. Nothing shifts, nothing needs adjusting, and there's less drag. For lap swimming, surfing or diving it's the clear choice.

Are one pieces coming back into fashion?
They never really left, but the modern cut is different: higher leg line, cheeky or Brazilian back, high neck or long sleeve options. The silhouette now sits much closer to a bikini than the one pieces of twenty years ago.

Is a one piece more flattering than a bikini?
Neither is inherently more flattering. Fit decides it. A one piece does create a longer vertical line, and a bikini with high-waisted bottoms achieves something similar.

Can you wear a one piece as a bodysuit?
Yes, and it's one of its practical advantages. With linen trousers, shorts or a skirt, a one piece works as clothing straight off the beach.

Which is better for a beach holiday?
Bring both. One piece for anything active and for days you'll go straight to lunch, bikini for sunbathing. Our beach packing list has the full version.

What if I'm a different size on top and bottom?
Buy a bikini, or look for a one piece cut with a longer torso. Forcing a one piece to fit two different sizes usually means it pulls at the shoulders or rides up at the leg.
